Hi everybody,
obviously, a Windows update dated Nov. 14th 2017 (KB4048957 for Windows 7, KB4048958 for Windows 8.1, KB4048954 + KB4048955 for Windows 10) breaks various Epson dot-matrix printers. Epson is apparently already working on the appropriate fixes.
According to hints in a German IT board, the problem may be solved by simply reinstalling the appropriate driver, other forum participants say that it should be sufficient to simply re-select the driver.
