A tabulator separates a paragraph in two sections. You can adjust the tab properties in the formula assistant dialog for this paragraph (card page "Tab"):"Position" specifies the distance of the (virtual) dividing separator from the left border, a negative value refers to the right border.
"Tab Alignment" specifies the text alignment in the second section.
Sample ({TAB} corresponds to the inserted tab character):

with "Position 50mm" and "left" causes "tab test!" to begin 5cm from the left border of the text object.:
