Variables and fields differ basically in their "lifetime". Fields are used within table/report container objects and change from record to record, while variables are mainly used in the "surrounding" objects that make up the page header and footer and typically don't change at all or from page to page. By default, variables are not available in table/report container objects. However, if you require them to be insertable, simply set

or the corresponding AddVarsToFields property of the components (.NET, VCL, OCX) to “True”.
